Week 1 (30/01) : Introduction Session and Nikon D7000 Exercise

In this first session of Creative Production Photography after introducing ourselves to each other as well as talking about the course itself, we were all asked to take the Nikon D7000 cameras out onto campus and take 9 or more photographs, 3 good, 3 bad, and 3 random.

My 3 good photographs are:

Photo 1: What I liked most about this photograph is how the rain drops on the handle of the bike in the middle of the picture are perfectly in focus and are really sharp against the contrasting blur of the background and the other bike handle in the foreground. I think having the middle of the photo in focus and the rest blurred makes a really nice focal point and creates a point of interest for the eye of the viewer.

Photo 2: I think this photograph is 'good' because of the interesting framing of the subject being photographed, i.e the car. I also like how the bold red and the slightly more muted background creates a nice visual contrast.

Photo 3: I really like this photograph because of the slightly ominous feel that it gives off. I think the exposure is pretty spot on and I like the way that the photo captures the light from the sign reflecting off the brick wall. The sign is also framed perfectly in the centre of the image and I think this adds an element of greater success.

My 3 bad photographs are:

Photo 1: I think that this photograph is 'bad' due to it being under exposed and the figures walking in the background distracts from the main focus of the photo. It is also slightly out of focus which takes away from the clarity of the image.

Photo 2: This photograph is slightly over exposed and gives the image a washed out look. The photo doesn't have much colour and although this was mainly down to the weather on the day, sometimes this can give a nice gloomy and mysterious feel to the image, but unfortunately this effect did not happen this time round for me.

Photo 3: This photograph isn't the worst of the bunch that I took but the only things that I can criticise are the it's slightly out of focus which again takes away from the photos clarity, also the figure in the foreground distracts from the importance of the emergency phone sign and detracts from the visual impact that it has on the viewer.

My 3 random photographs are:

Photo 1: This photograph is neither 'good' nor 'bad, it was just a poster that I stumbled across and I thought the design was interesting and wanted to capture it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to capture it in a way that was 'artsy' as I had first hoped.

Photo 2: I really like this photograph, the only thing that prevented me from classing it as 'good' is the fact that it is slightly too dark. Apart from that though I really like the framing of the subject and the clarity is pretty spot on.

Photo 3: This photograph is just a snapshot that I took whilst I was walking around campus trying to find something visually interesting to capture. Unfortunately due to the fact that I quickly took this whilst I was walking meant the photo came out a little blurry and out of focus. Although, I really like the contrast between the orange of the leaves and the green in the grass, and I think this makes a really interesting visual contrast.

For our homework task we were asked to find some images that we found inspiring and post them here on our blogs. There are 3 images that I found particularly inspiring and the thing that I like most about all of them is the vibrant sunset like colours that they all capture. Sunsets are one of, if not my favourite thing to photograph so these photos really caught my eye and sparked an interest in me after seeing them. I'd like to be able to take as visually effective photos as these myself in the future, and this is something that I aim to work towards. The first photograph originates from a peer that I worked with in college named Joel Thorpe. I really love his work as its a similar style to the sort of thing I am interested in. I'm not too sure where the last two photographs originate from due to the fact that I stumbled across them on pinterest and there wasn't any information on where they came from. Nonetheless I find all 3 images really inspiring.
